Twentieth century snobbery had so dismissed Haydn that even the London symphonies were relegated to a status of little more than program opener at most concerts. H.C. Robbins Landon succeeded more than all other musicologists in elevating Haydn's oeuvre in the public consciousness, though the operas and piano trios are still shamefully ignored. His passing will also mark the end of an important era of discovery and scholarship on this master, picking up where his great mentor Karl Geiringer had left off. I hope those efforts will continue with Dr. Landon's students.

I am hearing reports that H C Robbins Landon has died. If confirmed this is a sad loss, doubly so in this of all years. Haydn enthusiasts owe him so much.

I recently purchased the "Haydn Edition" from Brilliant Classics. Naturally there are some performances with which I may take exception but it is wonderful to have this treasure trove at my finger tips. I think the symphonies are superbly done by Adam Fischer and his amazing
musicians.
Although I have always appreciated Haydn I find my love of his music grows and grows with age.

Haydn has such variety of beauty and humor that I can think of no one else in the field of symphonic composition who can compare to him, and that is taking into consideration with great respect such giants as Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert. It is true that there are some of his compositions that he apparently dashed off as standard fare to fulfill his obligations to Prince Esterhazy, but the vast majority are marvelous. I recommend some comments on Haydn by Sir Simon Rattle that are on Youtube.

The New Esterházy Quartet is presenting for the first time in America the complete Haydn quartets on period instruments. Thus far they have performed 60 of the 68 quartets in San Francisco, with other concerts in Los Angeles, New York, Berkeley, and Palo Alto. The cycle will conclude next season, after which NEQ will present concerts of extra-canonical quartet music by Haydn, as well as works by his students and those who dedicated works to him. Can you direct me to such sites in London?

I would appreciate any information about whether the Dodeci Menuetti di Ballo (Hob. IX: 11) and the Tedeschi di Ballo (Hob. IX: 12), a.k.a. (In his Haydn's biography, Marc Vignal mentions a 1950 recording by Hans Gillesberger and the Vienna Opera Orchestra, published by "the late Haydn Society"...).

May I recommend a CD I have recently acquired? It is called deLirium, one explanation being that it contains 2 pieces for lyra organizzata as well as two works for baryton, and the former are played using a reconstruction of the lyra that looks very convincing. Guiding spirt seems to be Christophe Coin, the accompanying ensemble is his Ensemble Baroque de Limoges, the label is Laborie, the number LC 003. More at www.ebl-laborie.com from where I think the CD is obtainable - try the rubric Boutique.
